Hello!
Thought I would talk today about the benefits of a Golden-Lab mix. Both my helpers in fur suits have been Golden-Labs, and obviously taking the two most popular service dog breeds in the country makes for a superior assistant. This is why:
Traits of the Golden Retriever:
1. a strong, athletic dog, slightly longer than he is tall
2. his coat is wavy and slightly coarse with an undercoat, nearly waterproof
3. he sheds. A lot.
4. he regards all as friends, devoted and obedient
5. he tends to be boisterious and enthusiastic
6. he is easily distractible during training due to that enthusiasm
7. he's eager to please and enjoys learning
8. he especially enjoys retrieving
9. he tends to 'overthink' at times and will take the weight of the world on his doggie shoulders
10. he requires physical and mental exercise or he will get into trouble
11. health issues are a problem, particularly cancer
Traits of the Labrador Retriever
1. he is slightly longer than he is tall, just like the Golden Retriever
2. his coat is short with an undercoat, nearly waterproof
3. he sheds. A lot.
4. he is devoted, amiable, loves children as well as adults and is good with pets
5. he is a calm house dog and playful outside in the backyard
6. he loves to learn and is eager to please
7. he is very powerful and eager to retrieve
8. he requires physical and mental exercise or he will get into trouble
9. his main physical vulnerbility is hip-displasia
10. he tends to gain weight easily
Traits of the Golden-Lab
1. he has a good temperment, loving, intelligent, well-mannered and gentle
2. his coat is fine with a slight undercoat
3. he sheds. A lot.
4. he likes to know his trainer/owner is comfortable being in charge
5. easy to train
6. he likes to please his owner
7. he is very powerful and eager to retrieve
9. he is an active house dog and active outside as well
10. he requires physical and mental exercise or he will get into trouble
9. his main physical vulnerbility is hip-displasia
10. he never met a bite of food he didn't like
The hope is by using a hybrid, the service dog will combine the best traits of both beloved breeds. For the most part, they do. Jet was a hybrid: Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever mix. Frax is a hybrid as well: Golden Retriever/Golden-Lab mix. There are some major differences between them.
Jet was short, Frax tall. Jet was boisterous, Frax is Zen. Both were/are powerful. Both shed. A lot. They require daily brushing. Both were/are devoted, amiable, love adults and children, good with other pets, love to learn, easy to please. Jet loved to retrieve and would do it all day. Frax gets bored and wants to do something else. Both require(d) mental exercise. Both were/are chow hounds. Both were bred and delivered on-site within the Canine Assistants enclosed breeding/training facility at the farm, and trained for eighteen months there, until ready to pick their person.
Hope this helps a bit when you see a Golden-Lab at work. They are more refined looking than a lab, and their temperment is wonderful just like both breeds. For the most part they love water (except Frax!), and love to work-retrieve. Usually they like to play-retrieve, but Frax likes to mix up his play with running and walking as well.
