The January day my husband and I walked into the training room at Canine Assistants was the day my world opened up again. Canine Assistants, established by Jennifer Arnold, is the tip-top canine helper agency in the country. I blundered upon it in a web search in 2004, after having to retire from active community nursing and work from home as a nurse consultant, due to complications of Multiple Sclerosis.
I was teamed with my first assistant dog, Jet in January 2004. He opened doors for me...literally. He helped me walk steadily, heeled by my wheelchair, lay at my side on sick days, while I worked online, predicted seizures twenty minutes beforehand, preventing the worst of the symptoms. There are so many things he did for me emotionally and physically, it's too much to describe in a paragraph.
Jet's successor is Frax. We've been a team since 2011. He does the same things that Jet did for me, with his own special panache! The photo above is Frax and I at the Rossini Festival in Knoxville, this past Saturday!
Canine Assistants has given me, and so many others a second chance at a life well-lived, with joy, hope and unconditional love. We have a phrase that 'angels walk among us. Jennifer is my angel.
