Hello,
Hope you all had a fantastic July 4th. As per our regular routine every 4th, Bill and I watched fireworks on TV, and Frax slept peacefully at my feet. That was until a 'crazy neighbor' decided to start his one man fireworks display. He must have saved up all year, because it went on, and on...and on! Each salvo louder and seemingly closer than the last!
What to do? Frax was visibly getting a tad stressed, and Bill and I were getting well into the annoyed range as 1130pm came and went with no let up in sight. We just cuddled Frax more, made much of him and how well he tolerated things, then got him a crunchy bone to indulge in (that last was what settled him down well!) Food usually works well with Frax!
Eventually our neighbor either got tired or his wife threw a fry pan at his head to get him to stop!
Tennessee is one of those states in the US where it is still legal to buy fireworks. The locals, especially in the more rural areas, really are more 'into' the fireworks. It's likely because there aren't any professional fireworks in their locale to go to...and because most guys like to blow things up.
One of the worst sentences you can ever hear from an American male is “hey... watch THIS!” Trust me. I was a nurse...it never fails: those three words always preclude catastrophe, particularly when there's ammo around! There is always some poor soul that hurts himself or someone else inadvertently on July 4th.
Tonight Frax and I sprawled out after dinner, enjoying the spreading darkness and the song of the cicadas winding up for yet another night. Suddenly, two distinct 'BOOM's' split the evening! Frax was great~ he didn't even flinch, but I have to say I did!
It had to happen a few more times for me to figure out someone was firing off some leftover fireworks. I'm not sure why they didn't wait till dark. Some things aren't explainable. Just as Frax and Jet knew to relax to the cue: “no big deal”...I will take their advice and snuggle in, letting the night wrap around our snug home like a darkling blanket.
Later...
