Retired K9 Officer in Desperate Need of Forever Home!!!

Rex is a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois. After all these years protecting the streets of Albuquerque , NM he is retiring, as is his handler. His handler has a small child however, and cannot adopt him. The department is considering putting him down despite offers by handlers who have experience with military and police dogs offering him a home.

This is becoming a relatively common dilemma with canine military and police dogs that retire. Many wind up being put down, which is senseless. The police and military have put in much time and money training them, and using them. They need to go the extra mile to find them good homes in their old age.

It is problematic homing these aging canines due to the special training they have received. Obviously, a child-free home would be needed, as well as a person who knows about these type of high energy and intelligent dogs.

Please pass this link around, perhaps it will save the life of one who devoted his to saving ours.

An update to Rex's fate came in one day ago, three rescue organizations are considering him for adoption rather than putting him to death. All three facilities are no-kill non-profit organizations. Vets work with the dogs acclimating them to civilian life. If the dog still cannot be adopted out, they remain at the sanctuaries for the rest of their lives. A much better solution than just killing a dog at the end of his service career.
