Not to be a spoil-sport, but Turkeys can kill....or make canines very, very ill. No-one wants to spend the night at the doggie ER on Thanksgiving, so below are some foods to avoid with our little furry friends. Best to stick to dogfood and dog-treats. They will be just as happy!
Turkey bones! Cooked or uncooked! Just like there are chicken bones everywhere *per J.Arnold! There are turkey bones everywhere on Thanksgiving and they are killers! The slivers fracture and pierce throats and intestines and can kill quickly. NO TURKEY OR CHICKEN BONES EVER!!!!
Turkey skin. It's high fat and ingesting large amounts of turkey skin can lead to pancreatitis which is life-threatening. Symptoms are: vomiting, abdominal pain and lethargy.
Onions and garlic: these foods contain sulfites, which are toxic to dogs.
Alcohol: any alcohol, particularly the hops in beer is toxic to dogs, and can cause death
Nuts: all nuts are toxic, particularly macadamia nuts
Nutmeg: can cause serious nervous system problems like seizures and and other issues. In extreme cases it can cause death. Both pumpkin and sweet potatoes are fine for dogs, in moderation~ plain! Anything added in the way of dressing and seasoning is not.
Chocolate: I believe everyone knows this unless they grew up under a rock. All chocolate is toxic for dogs and can kill quickly. Baking chocolate-dark chocolate is the worst it's been called doggie Kryptonite it is so lethal. It can cause bloating and pain as well.
Dough and eggs can contain raw salmonella...so keep your pup away from you while you are cooking and clean up any kitchen spills on the floor immediately.
Sage is a herb used in cooking, which if a pup ingests it causes stomach upset. The essential oils in the herb are to blame for the adverse reaction.
Ham~ do not feed your dog ham. It causes MASSIVE diarrhea. This is my own personal experience. Trust me on this. Our vet confirmed it. No ham, they can't digest it.
Turkey...the meat~ too much can cause pancreatitis from the fat in it...again their systems can't handle all that fat.
Wine, grapes, raisins~ are poison to dogs...don't feed any of this to them. Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure and death. Keep anything that once was a grape away from your dog!
IN CASE OF ACCIDENTAL POISONING...CALL 1-888-426-44358*there is normally a fee for this advise, charged to your credit card...I believe it's $30.
