COMPUTER HELL: DUO

Computer hell continues. Today I opened the 'new to me' laptop (Dell Latitude #3 with Windows 7), and got The Black Screen of Death! Neither could it acess the internet, which my other computers can do. Not good. Reinstalled the operating system, and it is as clean as a new-born babe, all my stuff on it gone...gone...gone....(I backed it up on a stick, which is why I'm not beating my head on the table!)

So...annoyance factor is very high. My hubby of course, who has said before of my computer tinkering to save a buck “Just go and find a computer you like and buy the zi!% thing!” Which is a nice thought, though crudely put. It's just that money doesn't grow on trees around here, and it would be nice if the refurbished laptop would have worked. I thought it was a tad cheaper than it should be. Anyhoo, I'm going to try my best to get my money back on it, or sell it to some brave soul with more patience than I have.

Apparently even new Dells right now are having issues with overheating due to software problems in the OS. Too much stuff crammed into the Windows version that they are loading on all their computers. Hence, the computers are over taxed, get hot easily, and die an early death. This is all according to some threads I've read about my like experiences in Windows. Even the new ones. That is concerning, since I only know Dells, not counting my first horrid experience with Gateway.

The Refurb Dell Latitude XL “Ol' Bess” #1 isn't too usable either, since it can't capture the internet unless it's directly plugged into the net, and it's battery is dead, and it has to be plugged into juice. Kinda kills the reason for having a mobile laptop! I'm just gonna use both elderly laptops till they drop. Ol Bess is in retirement in the office, where she can be directly plugged in.

I've got Dell #2 on a cooling pad, and elevated it with a gatorade bottle cap, then taped it all together to keep all the vents open. It seems to keep it a lot cooler, and makes quite a visual statement through the use of packing tape and silver duct tape!

I'm done trying to put new machines together from Dell, since I know now I can't get an uncorrupted version of windows on their machines (or so some threads would have us think!) , new or old. Putting a new clean and uncorrupted version of windows is more than my noggin and computing skills are able to do, especially since I am working with files that I don't really need to lose (they are backed up on an external stick). Plus, I don't have an uncorrupted Windows 7 file to download, and I'm not gonna buy one.

I'm with Frax now. I want to groan loudly and put my head on the keys. Maybe I will! It works for him.

Looks like I need to check out HP. Wally world is having some great sales. Best Buy, not so much. I haven't checked KMart yet, it's where I got this nice little machine, so they might have something equally nice in the weeks to come.

I'm going to research that thought before running out to buy a computer. It still irks me though. They

give you less and less when you buy a computer, yet charge you more. For instance...I like a DVD/CD on my laptop. Used to be, that came pretty standard with them. Not anymore. Why? Have we all stopped watching home movies? Have we stopped burning DVD's loaded with priceless pictures? Are we using sticks for all that? No. So why take that off a laptop to make it “thin”, and lighter weight?

Personally, I don't think the lighter weight is such a grand idea. A couple of inadvertant falls with the lighter laptops and you are buying a new computer.....hmmmmm....maybe that's the idea. Ya think! My very first laptop, a Gateway that had the most gorgeous screen...had miserable hinges that failed after 8 months. It's not as though I swung it around my head by the hinges. I was floored to open it one day and have the top come off in my hands. Ah yes...memories...

So, here I am, thought I had fixed the computer problems, but no dice. Haven't really lost anything, since It's all backed up on a stick, but it's really annoying. Frax has groaned as he has watched me struggle with this tonight. He's been licking my broken toe/foot, so that was kind of him!
